The Michigan Brain Bank is partnering with the Kellogg Eye Center to conduct a study to learn more about eye diseases within our Brain Autopsy and Donation Program. Eye diseases include diabetic retinopathy, central serous retinopathy, vein occlusions, macular degeneration, and others. Little is known about the progression of human eye disorders because the eye, unlike other tissues, is not available for biopsy. Studying post-mortem eye tissue could give researchers important information into mechanisms of the disease and potential treatments for common and rare conditions alike.
Is this study voluntary?
Participation in this study is voluntary. You don’t have to participate in this study if you do not want to. Choosing not to be in this study won’t affect your participation in the Michigan Brain Bank, Brain Autopsy & Donation Program or affect your medical care in any way. Even if you agree to join this study now, you can change your mind later and withdraw.
Can there still be an open casket?
Yes. Eye donation will not cause any noticeable alteration of your appearance.
What research is being done on the eyes?
This research includes looking at the eye tissue under a microscope or looking at the genetic or protein composition of the eyes. Each set of eyes will undergo detailed imaging to identify changes due to diabetic retinopathy and other degenerative conditions. We will use the information found in your medical record, in addition to your donated eye tissue, to gain a better understanding for how disease affected your eyes.
Will participation in the Brain Autopsy and Donation Program be required for the Eye Donation Program?
Yes. The Eye Donation Program is in addition to the Brain Autopsy and Donation Program. Eye donation is only open to Brain Autopsy and Donation participants. Participation in both programs is always voluntary.
Are there any costs or fees involved?
There is no charge to you, your family, or your health insurance for the arrangement and performance, research, and testing of the eye donation.
How do I register for an eye donation?
To indicate your “intent” for an eye donation, you should download, complete, and sign either Forms E-1 or E-2 in the Michigan Brain Bank's Eye Donation Program Booklet, return completed form E-1 or E-2 to the Michigan Brain Bank team @ UMHSBRAINBANK@med.umich.edu or contact us at (734) 647-7648.
